June WBN - Keeping You / Business Safe

At our June 20th WBN meeting, we were honored to have from Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Department, Detective Belcher and First Sergeant Smith and our very own Chief of Police Parsons.  Discussion was centered on protecting you and your business, community watch and available programs to keep you, your employees and business safe from predators and scammers.  With all the scams that are out there it can be confusing to know what is true / false when being contacted by phone or through email.  The scammers have gotten pretty good.

Check out the 1-page handouts covering all these scams – Job, Money Wiring, Imposter, the IRS, Grandkid(s) Health Care, and Money Mule.  There is reporting information also available if you are concerned or have had contact with someone that has tried to scam you.

There were three booklets on Cyber Security for Small Business (FTC DHS, NIST & SBA), A Guide for Business – Security (FTC) and Protecting Personal Information – A Guide for Business (FTC) that were made available.  There are many resources available through the FTC https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/small-businesses .

With the mixed-use properties / neighborhoods in Colonial Beach, there is a Business Watch Member program that meets quarterly. A compliment to our Neighborhood Watch program provided through CBPD.   Another program that is available is a Building Safety / Security check.  They will come out and do a complete assessment of your location and provide you with information to secure your building.  Something that Insurance Companies like to see.

If you are interested, in participating in the Business Watch Program, complete the form and send it to First Sergeant Antwan Smith at ansmith@westcoso.us  (POC).  This too is important as information on scams or crime can be shared between businesses.   I encourage you to sign up and attend their meetings.

Collaboration between CBPD and Westmoreland Sheriff’s Department is important to our community and businesses. Working together keeps our community, employees and our businesses safe.  If you need more information, you can reach out to our CBPD or First Sergeant Antwan Smith at the non-emergency number of (804) 224-7612.
